Softly at Sunrise A KGI Novella edition by Maya Banks Romance eBooks
This is a short novelette about Rachael and Ethan re-developing their marriage in the aftermath of the events in the novel "The Darkest Hour". (Rachael was discovered to be alive and held captive in South America, after a year in which her husband believed she had died in a plane crash. Her captors kept her toasted on drugs and she had lost both her memory and a significant portion of her identity.)CONS:
1) It starts out slooooooooooooowly.
2) Ethan overcompensates for his previous relationship sins to the point that he could be construed as overbearing and/or abusive. Constantly demanding his wife text him when she arrives anywhere, and trying to control all her movements is dancing in bad mojo land.
3) Rachael's past wasn't mentioned. Her parents died, and she came to live with the Kellys as a young teen, which is an important aspect to her relationship with the Kelly family, being both married to one of them, and raised as a foster sister to the rest would have a tendency to affect your perspective.
3) Rachael is a public school teacher. HER QUOTE: "Me and the babies are fine,". AHHHHH!!!!!!!!! I noted in my kindle "Did she forget her native tongue?" Come on! How did that slip past the editor?
PROS:
I love the books and characters, and this one captured the voices of this particular couple perfectly.
When the novelette did pick up - it more than made up for the slow beginning.
I also liked that Ethan also had aftermath of dealing with his wife's captivity and that he sought professional help.
I love that the author recognizes that women can associate all their `bad' feelings/memories to a place or a home, and upon moving away, can symbolically both forgive and restart their lives afresh.
Of course this made me want to pick up and read "The Darkest Hour" again and deeply sigh as I wait for PJ's story in December.

Softly at Sunrise A KGI Novella edition by Maya Banks Romance eBooks Reviews
The Darkest Hour is the first in Maya Banks KGI series featuring Rachel and Ethan. Their story was dark, yet hopeful, but the beauty of it was that the ending was bittersweet and realistic as opposed to a neatly wrapped package with a bow on top. This novella, several stories and years later, catch us up on how Rachel and Ethan progress and it's simply a wonderful story. I honestly don't know why more writer's don't do this, but it gives us a glimpse of how the family has continued to work together and how Rachel and Ethan have grown stronger.
Clearly, this is not a standalone standalone story. You have to have read at least the Darkest Hour, the first in the series, but all the characters from the others are also in here. I love how each addition of the story brings back to all the family members working together and KGI fans will be thrilled with the update. It also provides a new sneak peek at the next in the series in a little more detail.
I felt like I was home again. I love this series of novels, all the adventure and romance included along the way. Yes, I cried again, I think I do sometime in each book. Now I will not tell you the story as I hate when I know everything that happens from reading a review. Usually I can tell a little as a teaser but as you have by now guessed this is a short novella. I almost didn't buy it because I had liked Ethan and Rachel's story so much from the past ones - also I prefer at least 200 pages in the books I choose ( I read too fast) But, I am glad I did, it completed their story line perfectly. If you have read this series you will love it. If you have not read any of the series, do not start here go find "The Darkest Hour" the first in the series. I promise once you have read that you will not be able to stop until you have read them all; hunky men, beautiful woman, peril and danger with some sex thrown in what more can you ask for. Can wait until January for the next one to come out!!
I thought this Novella was a good continuation of the Ethan/Rachel story line from the 1st KGI Book. Rachel and Ethan had some marital problems that drove them apart and ended badly when Ethan asked for a divorce right before Rachel left for a Mercy Mission in another country. Ethan realized what a mistake he made and was going to apologize and try to fix it when Rachel returned. Rachel was mistakenly thought dead in a Plane Crash en route home , until a year later when Ethan found out she was actually kidnapped and then he and his Special Ops brothers (they are all Special Ops) rescued her. This book continued several years later and starts when the real healing is beginning for them as a couple.
It really brought closure to that story line, and allowed for a nice glimpse into how the Kelly family is a whole now that another 3 of the other 5 brothers have married as well. A little too sappy at times, which happens when the Kelly family is together. But altogether well written. Even though the concentration was rightfully Ethan and Rachel it had a suspenful and action filled mid section for a novella....
I have really enjoyed this series so far and was happy that Maya Banks returned to this couple for a novella. So much has happened to Rachel Kelly, she has had to learn to not only live again, but to love again. I felt that throughout the series there wasn't much information regarding Rachels personal developed with Ethan.
After finishing the KGI Series first novel The Darkest Hour, I was left feeling annoyed with Ethan's character. Oh yes....he was cute.....buff.....a hero who saved his wife, but I felt he was a tad shallow. Maybe because of how easily he was prepared to throw their love away in the beginning of the story.
Throughout the series, readers have been able to read snippets of how Rachel has been coping with day to day tasks and small but significant challenges, but not much more. Rachel Kelly has simply been enduring......well not any more. Rachel has decided to take life by the horns and Ethan has stood up to the plate and showed that he will do what ever it takes to keep her safe......all is good in the Kelly compound.
Now......if only a few KGI friends can sort out there attractions hmmmmm
